Pumzile Molimi, student doctor at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, explores the benefits of reflective journaling from her own experience.
______
As a medical student, I've come to realize that amidst the chaos of lectures, exams, and clinical rotations, there exists a powerful tool for personal growth and self-awareness: reflective journaling. Through the simple act of putting pen to paper, I've discovered a sanctuary where I can process my experiences, foster introspection, and nurture my holistic development.
Reflective journaling has become my trusted companion, accompanying me on my journey of self-discovery and personal growth. In the quiet moments between lectures and rounds, I find solace in the pages of my journal, where I can pour out my thoughts, emotions, and reflections without judgment or reservation.
Each entry in my journal is a snapshot of my inner world, capturing the highs and lows, the triumphs and challenges of my medical education. Whether I'm recounting memorable patient encounters, grappling with ethical dilemmas, or exploring my own values and beliefs, the act of writing allows me to make sense of my experiences and gain insight into my thoughts and emotions.
Through reflective journaling, I've learned to embrace vulnerability and authenticity in my writing, allowing myself to express my deepest fears, hopes, and aspirations. In doing so, I've discovered a deeper understanding of myself, my motivations, and my purpose in medicine.
One of the most profound lessons I've learned through journaling is the importance of self-awareness in medicine. By taking the time to pause, reflect, and articulate my thoughts, I've gained a greater understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as a future physician. I've uncovered patterns of thought and behaviour, identified areas for growth, and cultivated a greater sense of clarity and purpose in my personal and professional life.
Maintaining a reflective journaling practice hasn't always been easy. There have been days when I've struggled to find the words or moments when I've doubted the value of my reflections. But through perseverance and commitment, I've come to realize the transformative power of reflection through the written word.
To anyone considering starting a reflective journaling practice, I offer the following advice:
• Set aside regular time in your schedule for journaling, even if it's just a few minutes each day.
• Create a safe and comfortable space where you can write without distractions.
• Start small with simple prompts or open-ended questions to get the creative juices flowing.
• Be honest and vulnerable in your writing, allowing yourself to express your thoughts and emotions openly and authentically.
• Review and reflect on your journal entries periodically to track your progress, identify recurring themes or insights, and set goals for personal and professional development.
Reflective journaling has been a transformative and enriching practice in my medical education. Through the pages of my journal, I've discovered the power of self-reflection to enhance empathy, foster personal growth, and deepen my understanding of myself and others. As I continue my journey to becoming a physician, I'm grateful for the insights and lessons that journaling has afforded me, and I look forward to the continued growth and discovery that lie ahead.
